Prosthodontics
The absence of teeth is called edentulism, which may be partial or total. Edentulism leads to an imbalance of the masticatory function and/or to impairment of appearance and speech. The treatment consists of the prosthetic rehabilitation of the edentulous areas. Prosthetic rehabilitation can be carried out in the classic way, through bridges and crowns anchored to the remaining natural teeth, or in the modern way, through the placement of implants and their restoration without affecting the natural teeth.
Dental restorations (crowns, bridges, dentures) are made from aesthetic materials, such as composite resins or ceramic materials, to satisfy the appearance component. The choice of materials is made by the dentist in accordance with the patient's wishes but also taking into account the biomechanical factors of the therapeutic situation.
Thanks to technological advances, the results of prosthetic treatments can be previewed digitally or in situ, so that the patient can visualise the proposed solution and give their informed consent to it before physical implementation (digitalised dental treatment plan).
